(I know it’s actually called December, 1963 but it will forever be etched into my brain as Oh what a night)

Oh what a night...just the thought of it makes me cringe

I absolutely loathed 80s pop.
At least in th 70s there were likes of Bowie and Marc Bolan.

Anything with autotuned vocals - it really sets my teeth on edge.

Jaan, agree with that, I loved the 80s music but it went downhill after that, with some exceptions

All of them. I genuinely hate all pop music that’s existed over the last 30 years. It’s all torturous soulless shit.

I know what you mean. Have never played in an exclusively covers band but have played covers in a lot of bands.
I was in a Prog/Metal band (our songs varied from punk to thrash/death metal, funk, spaced out jazz and full on vrey heavy prog) and we had ten or so up our sleeves and dropped two or three into our set a we fancied and most have them had been buggered about with:
Faith Healer (Alex Harvey) - our was pretty much exactly as they did it live.
Ace of Spades (for my Lemmy bass playing impression) but with techno bleeps, arpeggios and whoosh noises (our keyboard player had to something).
The dreaded Whole Lotta love (our singer was a massive Led Zep fan) except we dropped the breakdown in the middle and a inserted the Mission Impossible theme.
Doom metal version of the theme from A shot in the Dark.
I Never Glid before (Gong) metalled up a bit
Assault and Battery/Golden Void (Hawkwind)
The Peanuts cartoon theme.
Dangerman theme Thrash style.
The girl from Ipenema - we did this one dead straight as we all loved the song. It started as a joke during rehearsals.
The Sweeney theme. If ever the cops entered a venue we playing we'd bring the song we were doing to crashing stop and into this. This always got a laugh.

That's just off the top of my head. There were a few more; mostly film or TV theme tunes e.g. Joe 90, Assualt on Precinct 13.

Kylie Minogue - I should be so lucky.

She's been very lucky to have a career that's she had, basically because she's got a nice arse.

I get what you mean, but it's just the sense of dread when you see one of those songs appear on a setlist, when you're doing something that you are supposed to be enjoying!

Thankfully there are enough songs out there, that you can find things to play and then rotate them often enough that you don't destroy them for either listening or playing.

It is often dangerous to go back and listen to original versions of things you play, as you might think that you're playing it the same as the original, but often we've changed a bit, forgotten that we have and then get messed up in the head when listening to the original again.

The 'changed' version will be what is saved on the mental hard disk, so any confusion when playing it can cause a bit of a mess.

Anything by STEPS!

Re: Pop songs you despise
The flip.side of that though bungo is that if they keep.it to those songs you have already gone off through over play then it leaves the ones you do.like being left alone so you can still enjoy them.

Thankfully most of the bands I have been in have been a little too heavy to have Mustang Sally on the setlist. I have heard other bands play it 100s of times though.

If I had ever veered more to the bluesier side of things, I should think Mustang Sally would have been the first song on my list. :)

Having played in the odd covers band, I am surprised to not see Mustang Sally on your list. Has to be one of the most pointless and loathsome songs ever written, but for some reason people love it.

Beautiful Day - U2. Fuck me this is dire from a band who used to be great.

Totally agree.

I also think the age of MP3s and Spotify hasn't helped as many people don't listen to albums anymore but just have playlists of their favourite (and usually) well-known songs.
